Aftercare Instructions

Proper healing ensures your tattoo looks its best for years to come

Important

These are general guidelines. You'll receive personalized aftercare instructions based on your specific tattoo at the end of your session. When in doubt, reach out directly.

Healing Timeline

What to Expect

Day 1-3

Initial Healing

Your tattoo will be wrapped with a protective bandage. Keep it on for 2-4 hours (or as directed). When removed, gently wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry and apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment.

  • Redness and swelling are normal
  • May weep plasma/ink - this is normal
  • Wash 2-3 times daily
Day 4-7

Peeling Begins

Your tattoo will start to peel like a sunburn. This is completely normal - it's your body's natural healing process. Do NOT pick, scratch, or peel the skin.

  • Itching is normal - don't scratch
  • Continue washing and moisturizing
  • Flakes may contain ink - this is normal
Week 2-3

Surface Healing Complete

The outer layer of skin has healed. Your tattoo may look slightly cloudy or dull - this is called "onion skin" and is temporary. Keep moisturizing.

  • Peeling should be finished
  • May still feel slightly raised
  • Continue to avoid sun exposure
Week 4-6

Fully Healed

Your tattoo is fully healed from the inside out. The cloudiness has cleared and your tattoo is now in its final form. This is when we can assess if any touch-ups are needed.

  • Tattoo should look vibrant and clear
  • Safe to submerge in water
  • Contact me if touch-ups are needed

Recommended

Aftercare Products

Days 1-4: Healing Ointment

Use a thin layer of fragrance-free healing ointment like Aquaphor, A&D Ointment, or Hustle Butter.

Days 5+: Unscented Lotion

Switch to a gentle, fragrance-free lotion like Lubriderm, Eucerin, or Aveeno for daily moisturizing.

Long-Term: Sunscreen

Once healed, always use SPF 30+ sunscreen on your tattoo when exposed to sun. UV rays fade tattoos over time.

Signs of Infection - Contact Me Immediately

  • Increasing redness spreading beyond the tattoo
  • Excessive swelling that doesn't subside
  • Pus or discharge (not normal plasma)
  • Fever or chills
  • Red streaks emanating from the tattoo
  • Foul odor from the tattoo site

These symptoms are rare but important to catch early. When in doubt, reach out.
